Software Developer

Spatial Analytics & Tools Development

Location: Madrid, Spain | Norman Foster Institute

The Norman Foster Institute is seeking an English-speaking Software Developer with a foundation in Python programming, geospatial tools, and an interest in the intersection of cities, data, and design.

If you're curious, technically minded, and eager to apply your skills at the intersection of technology and urban transformation, we’d love to hear from you.

You’ll be part of a collaborative team developing tools to support interactivevisualisation tools and project workflows that assist our work with cities. This role involves building and supporting interface prototypes, and contributing to applied research on climate, mobility, land use, and public space.

We're looking for new talent with:

• Proficiency in Python, especially with geospatial libraries (e.g., GeoPandas, Shapely)
• Experience working with GIS platforms such as QGIS or ArcGIS
• Familiarity with web mapping, APIs, or interactive visualisation (e.g., Mapbox, MapLibre, Leaflet, D3.js, Vue)
• Experience using GitHub for version control, collaboration, and code documentation
• Experience working with spatial databases such as PostGIS and the ability to serve related data to web frontends via tile servers (e.g. Mapbox) and APIs (e.g. Supabase)
• The ability to problem solve and work constructively as part of a team

Some experience or proven ability and willingness to learn the following is a strong plus:

• Reactive and visualisation focused web frontend development via frameworks such Vue, particularly in a geospatial, mapping, and data visualisation context
• Building interactive dashboards or spatial data portals
• Working with raster data pipelines (e.g., GDAL, xarray) or remote sensing workflows
