The Head of Custom Publishing and Licensing

Kings Cross, London -- we are currently working remotely and have a strong virtual on-boarding induction in place.

The Head of Custom Publishing and Licensing is a global role, working to build and deliver a strong pipeline of custom publishing and licensing projects across all markets. The role is responsible for business development, exploring new business models and new business partnerships in order to offer customised and / or additional products or services to new and existing customers, as well as the implementation of a licensing framework to increase licensing revenues.

The Head of Custom Publishing and Licensing will also take responsibility for the definition and coordination of partnerships to support the delivery of the publishing programme. This person will work closely with the Commercial Operations function to ensure smooth handover of the partnership relationship once the commercial agreement has been finalised.

Key tasks for Custom Publishing and licensing:

  • To lead the custom publishing department, ensuring that objectives are aligned with the business priorities.
  • To define the objectives for the custom publishing department, including business strategies and operational models.
  • To work with the regional teams to develop a pipeline of opportunities for custom and licensing projects
  • In cooperation with regional teams, to develop and shape education-based proposals (publishing, services and licensing) that meet the needs of new and existing customers and deliver profit to the company.
  • To be accountable for the deliverables within the Custom Publishing department, to ensure that projects are delivered on-time, within budget, and to an appropriate level of quality.
  • To work closely with the Publishing and Licensing Manager to ensure that the Custom Publishing and regional pipelines and publishing resources are aligned.
  • To work closely with the Publishing team to define appropriate partnerships for the delivery of the publishing strategy and maintain the relationship
  • To work closely with the Commercial Operations team to ensure they have the necessary information to define the commercial terms.
  • To work with the Global Publishing Director, regional Publishing Managers and Regional Directors and sales teams to coordinate publishing and market policy and the delivery of custom publishing and licensing projects
  • Key relationships:

  • Global Publishing Director – line manager
  • International sales teams – exploring and securing versioning opportunities and business development opportunities
  • Publishing and Licensing Manager – line management
  • Custom Publishing project team – team management
  • Other internal departments: Core publishing teams, Design, Production, Digital, Operations, Rights, Finance, Marketing and Legal, Commercial Operations
  • Qualifications:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Skills/knowledge:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of multiple ELT markets
  • Experience or demonstrable track record of having worked in a global, commercial role to deliver on business targets (e.g. business development or business growth)
  • The ability to negotiate with internal (sales) and external customers; apply commercial acumen to ensure projects deliver value for money
  • Detailed understanding of ELT and/or educational publishing processes and best practice for both print and digital products, and ability to create and implement new processes
  • Awareness of pre-press, press and digital processes and how they impact manuscript development, and time and cost implications
  • Good commercial awareness and the ability to create and manage project P&Ls and understand how these input into company profitability
  • Flexible approach and the ability to adapt to changing environments
  • The ability to set and respond to extremely challenging schedules and deadlines
  • Team player familiar with high-performing team disciplines and management
  • Strong organisational skills
  • The ability to manage own workload and set priorities for the team
  • The ability and readiness to make presentations to management and to staff, as directed
  • Experience:

  • Extensive, market-focused publishing experience at project leadership level
  • Extensive project management experience across a number of complex publishing projects
  • Experience of working and negotiating with a wide range of people at varying levels of seniority
  • Experience of working within a structured yet changing publishing environment
  • Experience of developing, implementing and monitoring editorial and operational procedures
  • Experience of working and negotiating with Ministries of Education and preparing bids for tenders issued by Ministries of Education
  • Experience of working in a business development role
