- Project description: The project entitled "Expression and purification of Carnitine Palmitoyltransferase 1 isoforms for structural studies" is a joint bilateral proposal between the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) and the Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC, University of Oxford). The UIC researchers are expertson lipid metabolism, obesity, and CPT1c, while researchers at SGC have experience on cloning, expression, and purification of proteins for structuralstudies, like X-ray crystallography. This consortium is looking for a highly
motivated predoctoral student to be incorporated into our research.

- The main goal of the PhD project proposed is to express and to purify both human CPT1a and CPT1c proteins ineukaryotic expression systems for further structural and binding studies. CPT1a and CPT1c are transmembrane proteins that play a key role in the control ofmetabolism and obesity. The work will include baculovirus production for insect or human cells infection, the expression and the purification of the target
proteins, and structural and binding studies including X-ray crystallography and CryoEM, in order to solve the 3D structure and to analyze protein-ligand interactions.

- The PhD student will be supervised by researchers from both Neurolipid Group from UIC Barcelona and the Metabolism and OrganelleBiogenesis Group from the SGC.
The position implies working the most part of the time at the SGC in Oxford, with the possibility of performing some functional experiments at UICBarcelona. Moreover, the PhD student will have to give 60 hours per course in biology teaching at UIC Barcelona.

Eligibility: Candidates with a bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Pharmacy or similar, with a good academic recordand high level of motivation are invited to apply. Preference will be given to candidates with previous research experience.
